Seeing 23andMe’s list of 33 AA subgroups for the first time changed my brain chemistry and filled me with a sense of pride, belonging, and a hunger for knowledge. Black Americans are not a monolith and each subgroup contributes a special piece of fabric to create the quilt that is Soulaan culture.
African Americans in the Albemarle Sound region left a legacy of resilience and resistance. They fought against slavery through escape and by purchasing their freedom, often living side by side with free Black families from Virginia. This community placed a high value on the education of their youth and used their knowledge to resist oppression, nurture leadership, and contribute to the development of the Underground Railroad.
